Asian Games 2018 Drives Creative Economy Development Momentum

The 2018 Asian Games is a momentum for Indonesia to further introduce Indonesia’s creative economy to the world. The biggest sports event in Asia, which was held in Jakarta and Palembang, has successfully set a new standard in the presentation of world-level events. The 2018 Asian Games also managed to channel the ’Energy of Asia’ throughout the country.

To continue this spirit from the biggest sports event in Asia, the Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy (Bekraf) holds the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on November 6-8, 2018.

The Head of Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy, Triawan Munaf, said that until now, the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony of the 2018 Asian Games are still being the talk of the town. Moreover, many people considered that the event was elevated to the new standard.

Even so, he admitted that there were still several challenges that must be faced by the Indonesia’s creative industries players. “Through the WCCE 2018 conference in Bali, we would also want to learn from other countries that have developed their creative economy. So far, regulation is considered as a challenge that limits this creative economy. The publishing subsector, if carefully studied, can grow rapidly. Therefore, we want to have a common understanding to develop the creative economy, “said Triawan.

WCCE 2018 is the first international conference to discuss the creative economy. In this three-day event, there will be four main issues discussed, including social cohesion, regulation, marketing, and ecosystems and creative industry financing.

WCCE 2018 will discuss the Bali Declaration which will be proposed to the UN General Assembly next year. This is expected to further strengthen the ecosystem and support the development of the world’s creative economy, as the world enters the 4.0 era. (Asiska/Made)

Indonesia Initiate the First-ever World Conference on Creative Economy

Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy (Bekraf) in collaboration with Indonesian Ministry for Foreign Affairs initiate World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) to be held on November in Bali, Indonesia on 6 to 8 November 2018. This conference aims to establish networks among the global creative economy stakeholders, including government, international organization, experts, private parties, and media. Around the thousand participants are expected to come. Previously, Kick Off Friends of Creative Economy was held in Jakarta on May 2018 with 57 international participants. On October 2018, the Working Luncheon during the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly: “Unleashing The Potentials of Creative Economy to Achieve SDGs: Lessons from MIKTA Experiences” had been organized to retain the momentum of WCCE through discussion and sharing the best practices in promoting creative economy.

On October 17, Deputy Chairman for International Relations, Endah Wahyu Sulistianti mentioned WCCE during her speech in Djakarta Theatre at the launching of Opus, an economy creative’s book that is published by Bekraf. This second edition of Opus explains the development of 16 creative economy sub-sectors, Bekraf’s events and programs, the prospect of Indonesian and global economy, and also the condition of Indonesian economy. “United Nations acknowledges that WCCE should be held. United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) even recommends creative economy as one of the solutions to reach sustainable development growth,” Deputy Chairman for International Relations, Endah Wahyu Sulistianti has said.

Creative Economy contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is increasing exponentially. This was stated by the Head of the Indonesian Agency of Creative Economy (Bekraf), Triawan Munaf, during a presentation at a press conference of the “4 Years of Joko Widodo – Jusuf Kalla Administration Report” entitled ‘Building Indonesians towards a Developed Nation’ organized by Forum Merdeka Barat (FMB) 9 in the Building III Hall at the Ministry of State Secretariat on Tuesday (23/10/2018). Also present at this occasion were Presidential Chief of Staff, Moeldoko; Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Darmin Nasution, Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani, Minister of Industry, Airlangga Hartarto; Minister of Trade, Enggartiasto Lukita; Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya; Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti; and Minister of Public Works and Public Housing, Basuki Hadimuldjono.

“In terms of value, the Creative Economy GDP in 2016 has reached Rp 922.59 trillion and is projected to exceed Rp 1,000 trillion in 2017 and increasing to reach Rp 1,102 trillion in 2018,” Triawan said.

Furthermore, Triawan said that creative economy is increasingly in demand and has promising potential. In 2016, the contribution of Creative Economy to the national economy amounted to 7.44 percent and is projected to grow continually. Three creative economic sub-sectors with the highest revenue in 2016 were Culinary (41.69%), Fashion (18.15%), and Crafts (15.70%), while the sub-sectors with the highest growth were TV & Radio (10.33%), Film, Animation & Video (10.09%), and Performing Arts (9.54%). Also, in the same year, the total number of businesses engaged in Creative Economy reached 8,203,826.

The export value of Indonesia’s creative economy has reached US $ 20 billion, or 13.77% of Indonesia’s total exports in 2016. It increased by 3.23% from 2015 where the exports amounted at US $ 19.3 billion in value. Specifically, three sub-sectors contributing to the highest exports during this period are Fashion, Craft and Culinary. Triawan explained that Creative Economy is a new economic model based on thoughts and ideas, which will become the backbone of Indonesia in the future. “Indonesia, with such a rich diversity and cultural heritage, want to be a leader in the world; at least in formulating understanding between countries,” Triawan continued, soon on November 6 – 8, 2018, Bekraf will hold the first and largest creative economy-related conference in the world called “the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE)”.

“Through WCCE, Bekraf wants to convey that Creative Economy is for everyone, not limited to age, social class, country, ethnicity, religion, and so on.” Triawan explained.

Creative Economy at The UN General Assembly

Mexico, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Turkey, and Australia together with UNCTAD, UNESCO and UNDP brought the creative economy conversation to the UN in New York by co-hosting a side event entitled Unleashing the Potentials of Creative Economy to Achieve the SDGs on the margins of the high-level week of the seventy-third session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 1st October 2018.

The event was well attended with at least sixty guests seated for the keynote session and the following panel discussion.

The key themes that were covered included the:

  • emergence of the creative economy and creative networks as an enabler for sustainable development;
  • opportunities and threats posed by increased automation and digitization;
  • need for training, retraining, and upskilling for new industry jobs;
  • role of creative industries in promoting gender issues as well as diverse and marginalized views;
  • disparities in creative economic growth depending on geographies;
  • challenges of sharing lessons and practices between and among countries;
  • need to integrate creative industries into national economic and development plans;
  • huge potential for more South-South cooperation to leverage untapped potential.

Audience members, who came from within and outside the UN, echoed similar themes and concerns regarding developing creative industries.

The event set the stage for the upcoming World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE), to be held 6-8 Nov. 2018 in Bali, Indonesia. UNCTAD fully supports Indonesia’s efforts to host the WCCE. Being, as it is, the first global conference on the creative economy, it stands as an exciting initiative on the part of the Indonesian government and an opportunity to showcase how the creative industries can foster economic growth, promote inclusivity and boost sustainable development. The endorsement of the conference by President Joko, and his firm belief in the future of Indonesia’s creative economy, sends a clear message to the trade and development community as a whole. In raising the profile of the creative economy, the conference will help to realize its potential and ensure its place on the global agenda.
